| TAVAZIVA Dance perform 'Heart of Darkness' at The Lindsey Theatre Tavaziva Dance's five high-octane dancers bring their new repertory show 'Heart of Darkness' created by award-winning Zimbabwean-born choreographer and composer Bawren Tavaziva bringing his trademark fusion of African sensibility, music and dance moves within an entirely Western contemporary theatre context. Heart of Darkness features four austerely contrasting pieces. Silent Steps (17 minutes) A beautiful contemporary dance for three women, originally created in 2007 by Lincolnshire-born guest choreographer Harriet Macauley to a cutting edge soundscore by Richard Leonard. Kenyan Athlete (15 minutes) This new group work takes it's starting point from the expression "the sun is beautiful people" that inspired Bawren's highly successful Beautiful People for the Without Walls festivals consortium. Kenyan Athlete is set to a fast-paced soundtrack, exploring the beauty and physicality of Kenyan people and their surroundings. Sinful Intimacies (11 minutes) A sensual new duet by Bawren will be danced at different performances by either two men or two women, exploring in intimate details the unease of African society with same-sex love, which is usually perceived as a dark possession of dangerously subversive bewitchment. My Friend Robert (30 minutes) Bawren draws on his personal experiences and memories of growing up in the newly-independent Zimbabwe of Robert Mugabe, a leader of promise and vision, adored by his people. So what went wrong? Where do the visionary dreams, empowerment, redistribution of resources and flag-waving shade off into megalomania, economic meltdown, corruption and violence? Bawren's latest group work offers a deeply personal comment on the challenges facing Africa today. “A great company... their seamless blend of contemporary and traditional African movement, strikingly costumed and lit“ (The Independent, 2007) “A tribal sense of combat, but also of ecstasy... intensely uplifting, enchanting and energetic, and typically demonstrative of the pure joy of dance“ (Dancing Times, 2007) “Intriguing and deeply sensuous... nothing short of explosive“ (The Stage, 2006) |
