Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Lecture Demonstration
The Lindsey Theatre, Grainsby Avenue, Cleethorpes, DN35 9NX
Tuesday 24th June 2008 1.45 - 3.45pm
It's aimed at students/ teachers/lecturers who are studying/teaching dance at GCSE/BTEC level or above. But it's also open to anyone with an interest in contemporary dance. Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Lecture Demonstration offers participants a rare look ‘behind-the-scenes’. Alongside an inspiring performance by the full company, it offers insights into the work of a professional dancer, the development of Phoenix’s repertoire and the importance of sound and lighting to a performance. Participants also get the opportunity to test out their choreographic skills on Phoenix’s dancers! The Lecture Demonstration covers the following key areas: Section 1 – INTRODUCTION The Lecture Demonstration opens with a performance by the full company. Artistic Director, Darshan Singh Bhuller has created a new piece of choreography that condenses the company’s daily technique class into 15 minutes of pure dance. This is set to commissioned music from SAA-UK (South Asian Arts UK). Section 2 - CLASS Technique classes are undertaken on a daily basis in order to maintain and gain further skills and to prepare the dancer mentally and physically for the day ahead. Following the performance, CLASS is briefly dissected and specific elements highlighted and explained. Section 3 – LIGHTING DESIGN The company’s Production Manager will give students a brief insight to the process of lighting a dance production for performance. Section 4 – CHOREOGRAPHIC DEVELOPMENT The Lecture Demonstration then looks at choreography and compositional structures for creating a piece of dance work. Participants will be guided through the process of creating dance using motif development (dance development structures) This is an interactive element, which opens up the opportunity for participants to become involved in reshaping and designing a new dance work on the company’s dancers. Participants will develop an appreciation of the different structures involved in creating dance; this is particularly of use to GCSE/A level students who study choreography as part of their course. Section 5 – REPERTOIRE The Phoenix dancers perform excerpts from the current repertoire. Section 6 – QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS This is a chance for all students and teachers to put their questions to the company.
